New Huron Boutique Helps Families Dealing With Illnesses
By Maggie Kelch, Feature Writer
Have you ever seen a pig fly? Well, if you are in Huron this summer, you can visit a flying pig and help families in need. When Pigs Fly By The Lake is a new shop that opened at 511 South Main Street on June 11. The shop raises funds for The Piggyback Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Norwalk that helps families who are dealing with life threatening illnesses.
“If you are looking for a unique shopping experience and want to help a good cause, then this is the shop for you,” said Buffy Greenawalt, manager of the new shop. She explained that When Pigs Fly By The Lake is a combination of a unique boutique and an upscale antique/resale shop. In the boutique area of the shop you will find new fashions, accessories, purses, scarves, beach items and jewelry. Then, in the middle of the store, you will find furniture, antiques and other upcycled resale items, she said.
The new Huron shop is actually the third When Pigs Fly store, Greenawalt said. The other two locations, When Pigs Fly and When Pigs Fly Too, are located on Main St. in Norwalk. One is a boutique and one is an upscale antique/resale shop. “Our store in Huron is a combination of the two in Norwalk,” Greenawalt said.
“Coming in to one shop, you’ll get the benefit of both,” she added.
Greenawalt, who recently left Vermilion Elementary School where she was a licensed professional school counselor, has been a volunteer with the Piggyback Foundation for six years and is a member of their board. She proposed opening the Huron story because she saw how much the organization helps families.
The foundation provides assistance to families with children when a life-threatening illnessstrikesafamilymember.Itrunsthegamut from financial assistance to helping send kids to summer camp, paying sports fees or even providing a birthday party for a child, she said. Often, these simple joyful activities and events are no longer in the family’s budget when illness strikes.

“Once a child or parent is in treatment, the family’s money is needed for other things,” Greenawalt explained.
Since 2007, the foundation has supported 1,141 children in 550 families. In 2019, 94% of the funds raised went directly to families in need. The When Pigs Fly stores are a major source of funding for the organization.
The store is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to shopping at When Pigs Fly By The Lake, people can help the organization by donating items. Greenawalt said that anyone interested in making a donation can contact her to make an appointment. You can call them at (419) 616- 5288.
