and the two educators moved to Port Clinton City School District, where Art taught Industrial Arts, started a swim program, and became Jr. High Athletic Director before being promoted to District Athletic Director. He ended his career with Sandusky City Schools’ vocational program as Asst. Athletic Director, before transitioning into four decades in construction.
“Athletics are very important ... It gives you relationships you carry through life,” said Art, who coached his son’s Little League. He also volunteered with Sandusky Adult Education, to aid those learning skilled trades. “I think the big mistake is not doing more education in the tech- nical fields,” concluded Art. “We still have to build houses.”
A long-time Port Clinton Lion, Art also co-chaired the Magruder Charity Ball and served on the P.C.C.S.D. Board of Education, Lakeside Property Owner’s Association and Lakeside Board of Directors. Joan would say her husband has “never met a person he couldn’t befriend.” The Heslets, married 58 years, have one son, Todd, and three grandchildren.

Catawba’s Dave Slosser, a 1962 Port Clinton High School graduate, has devoted his life to sup- porting area youth. The retired guidance counsel- or, with 35 years at Danbury High School and 11 at Kelleys Island, serves as scholarship chairper- son for Firelands Positive People, Ottawa County Community Foundation, and Port Clinton Rotary Club.
Dave, an unfailingly positive person him- self, indicated “The High Positive Living Award,” through Firelands Positive People, is one of his passions. “The scholarship serves 15 high schools and recognizes deserving students who have over- come obstacles and are leaders in their schools and communities,” said Dave. “These young people have faced some of life’s toughest challenges and emerged with a positive outlook and approach to
