In between, he’s involved with the VFW, American Legion, Am Vets and Fleet Reserve Association to preserve the legacy of older vet- erans while encouraging young veterans “to get involved.” In conjunction with the Senior Center, he worked on the Armed Forces Day Ball in May. Wearing his original Navy uniform, Culp marches in parades and serves in a military honor guard at funerals, even standing watch at the casket of his first scout leader.

When Gay Hauke retired in 2007, she knew she wanted to find something to do that gave back to the community. “I’ve been blessed with a great life. With family, friends, and a job that have always given me so much. There was never a lot of time to do other things.”
She thought about what she wanted to do and volunteering at the Humane Society of Erie County seemed to be a natural fit. “I’m trying to think when I started. Not long after I retired. I love animals. I’ve had a dog and a cat my whole life. So, the Humane Society felt like the perfect fit.” She started by doing dishes, laundry and answering the phones. Today, the humane society
