to five days a week in addition to her volunteer work. Moore volunteers at the Sandusky State Theater as an usher. “It’s really great. It’s very social and I get to see all the incredible productions. I have been a volun- teer and patron to the Firelands Symphony Orchestra concerts and they are wonderful.” Moore loves to help all the local theaters and never misses a trip to the Cleveland Playhouse when a group event is planned.
You will see her anytime there is an event in the area. Her children have learned from her and all have careers that reflect her lifestyle: rehab therapist, teach- er, and family doctor. Recently widowed, Moore traveled the world with her husband Jim. She was on Team USA and ran triathlons and duathlons in Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Spain, Canada,
and Mexico.
For the past 30 years, Moore has assisted with
Firelands Area Runners, a group that encourages runners of all skill levels. She hosts a summer pool party for the group which encourages everyone to get off their couches, get outside, and get active. She helps with the Christmas party as well. You might one day find her volunteering to help with all the area 5k or 10k runs, but right now she’s not helping. “I partici- pate as a runner so I can’t help,” she explains. Moore frequently runs the 5k charity events around the area. So while she’s not volunteering per se, she’s actively participating in an event that is helping area charities. She’s also frequently winning her age group in those events, but she won’t mention that.

“I would advise all that when you volunteer, you not only help others; but, you will find help yourself with the social contact and the interesting events you can partake in. I hope for health and fitness and to continue to work, meet new people, have a lot of social fun, and continue to volunteer.”

Living by values instilled by the Cub Scout oath, “to help other people at all times,” John Culp, 74, began helping people at age 8, carrying that message throughout his life. “It’s a passion that drives me,” Culp says.
Friends for over 50 years, Terry Witter said, “He stood out for the many things he does.” Witter’s father was Culp’s scoutmaster in those early years, instilling that belief in him. Culp eventually achieved “Silver Beaver,” the highest scout award for volunteerism.
After high school graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and went on to various positions which led to a prestigious active and reserve Navy career lasting almost 42 years. An accomplished journeyman tool and die maker, and degreed mechanical engineer, John worked at Ford Motor Company while going to college full time and pro- viding for his family. He even found time to serve as his son’s scout leader.
With a career spanning over six decades, Culp has immersed himself now into volunteer efforts serving his country, acknowledging others for their deeds and serving the less fortunate. Though retired, Culp remains active with St. Vincent De Paul picking up and delivering bread. Since 2007, he spends a couple days each week using his skills
