thinks of to be-
gin music lessons,
however, older students have more time, money and focus. The FSO School of the Arts has taught music to hundreds of people of all ages since it was established in 1996.

The (FSO) School of the Arts is an offshoot of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, and was a vision of the late philanthropist, Ruth Frost Park- er, who was instrumental in instituting the school. Parker and countless other supporters, recognized the values of music enrichment and education.
Studies reveal music education has a positive effect on children’s academics, study habits, mem- orization, self-discipline, and self-esteem. People with early music training develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. The lon- ger a person is actively learning and playing mu- sic, the more likely the benefits will remain as one ages. But how about those of us over the age of 50? Research supports learning to play a musi- cal instrument later in life is indeed beneficial. A study done at the University of South Florida not- ed after 6 months of musical instruction, adults between ages 60 to 85 had an increase in memo- ry, verbal fluency, processing of information, and other cognitive functions.
The School of the Arts currently instructs about 70 students from ages 6 to 66, and has seven instructors offering lessons for piano, violin, cello,
