Three years ago, Sandusky County Convention & Visitors Bureau had the idea for a new way to bring vacationers into the area while celebrating the rich history of Sandusky
County. After the Ohio Turnpike Commission and Ohio History Connection painted a barn on the Ohio Turnpike with the portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes, the Visitors Bureau decided to build a barn trail.
In 2016, they designed and painted two historic barns in Fremont and Gibsonburg. The Fremont barn, located on Christy Rd., features the Battle of Fort Stephenson which took place in Fremont during the War of 1812. The barn in Gibsonburg is located on the corner of SR 600 and CR 32 and depicts 9-11, the
World Trade Center towers and Gibsonburg’s Public Safety Service Memorial logo. The next barn in the series was painted May 2018 and is located just east of Woodville on Main Street. It boasts an image of former Woodville Twp. resident Tom Henricks and commemorates his four space shuttle missions.
The newest barn on the Sandusky County Convention & Visitors Bureau Historic Barn Trail is located west of Fremont at 4246 W. State Route 20 and features the Sandusky County Bicentennial logo. In 2020, the county turns 200 years old. This barn, which is the first two-sided barn, was made possible by
the generous sponsorship of Terra State Community College and the Terra College Foundation. Like the other barns in this trail, the latest barn was painted by Scott Hagan, aka “The Barn Artist” and the barn canvas was generously donated by Kyle and Troy Amor.
