“It was set to be torn
down. But, due to the weather conditions in the fall of 1966, they could not demolish it. This gave time for people to organize to save it,” said Carolyn Sipkovsky. Sipkovsky is a member of Lorain Light- house Foundation, Inc. The foundation owns and oper- ates the lighthouse.
The Friends is an all-vol- unteer organization. Thanks to grants and fund- raisers, hundreds of thou- sands of dollars have been dedicated to totally reno- vating the lighthouse and maintaining it. On June
30, 2017 the Foundation and community celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the Lorain Lighthouse and an Ohio Historical Marker was dedicated to commemo- rate the occasion. The public can support the project by becoming a member of the Friends of the Lighthouse. A membership perk is a free tour of the Jewel of the Port ®. Membership applications are available at www.lorain- lighthouse.com.
“The lighthouse interior is furnished as it was in the 1950s’ when it was manned by the U.S. Coast Guard,” Sipkovsky said.
