It’s May along the lakeshore, and after enduring a cantankerous winter that stretched into mid-April, we welcome with open arms our green lawns, colorful flowers, beautiful songbirds and perhaps most of all, the warmth of the pre-summer sun. In May, our beaches begin to come to life and our coastal towns once again become lively, popular destinations. Whether you are a local, a first-time visitor or a frequent-beacher, you will find plenty to do culturally along the lakeshore as we head into summer, full-speed ahead!
Remembering and Honoring Our Veterans
“Detail, Halt! Left, Face! Order, Arms! Parade, Rest!” My dad, a Navy veteran, passed away this winter. He was honored with a military funeral which included a three-volley rifle salute, Taps, and the presentation of the folded American flag to my mother. This Memorial Day’s celebrations and ceremonies will therefore be bittersweet for my family and me as we pause to remember him as a father and husband and also as a veteran. My dad has now joined ranks with those
servicemen and women across our nation who each Memorial Day are honored with 21-gun salutes, memorial wreaths and flags at half-mast.
Along the lakeshore on Memorial Day weekend, virtually every town and city will hold ceremonies to salute their fallen heroes. Consider making a trip to Put-in-Bay, where the carronade and historical guns will be firing away at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial as respects are paid to fallen
