possible to wheel right down to the shoreline. Combingthebeacheveryday,theycollectde- bris while brightening the area with colorful um- brellas and chairs that visitors can rent by the hour for a nominal fee. Giving a hand, city work crews with power equipment, rake the sand weekly to re-
move large pieces of driftwood and seaweed.
To encourage area tourism, menus from lo- cal restaurants in addition to flyers and brochures from the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Vermilion are displayed in racks. “In a way, we serve as ambassadors for the city,” co-founder Larry Houff says. “We’ve had visitors from around the world: England, Germany and Australia. Sometimes they find us while driving
along the lake, visiting Lake Erie’s beaches.”
Cooperating
with the city of
Vermilion, the
group receives
kudos from the
mayor’s office,
parks depart-
ment and Main
Street Vermil-
ion. They have
donated funds
to help rebuild
the beach’s
wooden deck,
contributed to
preservation of
the lighthouse,
city fireworks
and other local
charities. Serving as mentors, their enthusiasm is catching. Church groups from Grace Methodist
and Trinity Lutheran have taken interest in the preservation and maintenance of Sherod and Showse parks in other areas of the city.
No doubt, this small group of com- mitted individuals has made, and will continue to make, a difference as Shore
Thing.
Shore Thing member Judy Williams offers suggestions to an area visitor.
Special tires make it possible for disabled individuals to enjoy the beach.
