“Shore Thing” Group Operates Little Beach Shack In Vermilion

Like waves lapping the shore, you can be sure the beach will be open this summer in downtown Vermilion. Positioned there, at the foot of Main Street , is a small wooden building overflowing with beachy things operated by a group that calls itself “Shore Thing”.
Dedicated to keeping the Main Street beach clean, accessible, approachable and eco-friendly, the determined group of 20 spirited Vermilion- ites are passionate about their responsibility. The concept developed during a dinner conversation between friends, Jennie McClendon, Reenie Rak, Gundula and Larry Houff, who recognized the
need in February 2011. With a lot of planning and a nod from city hall, they were up and running in a rented shed three months later.
Now, Shore Thing LLC is beginning their fifth season. Open daily from Memorial Day to the middle of September, the group is self sustaining. “We are all service minded individuals who are solidly centered, and we all try to listen and accept each other’s ideas. Our egos are in check,” coor- dinator Jennie McClendon emphasizes. “Individ- ually we may not have it together, but together we have it all.” Area maps, newspapers and travel information are distributed to visitors while pack-
aged snacks, beverag- es, lotions and beach paraphernalia are sold inside the shop. Sales of handcrafted, beach glass jewelry have enabled them to pur- chase a special wheel- chair. Provided as a complimentary ges- ture, the giant inflated wheels make it pos- sible for visitors with disabilities to enjoy the beach by making it
