Classic Duck Decoys And Calls Exhibited At Put-in-Bay Museum
Story and photos by Barb Clemons, Editor
History and collecting historical artifacts are labors of love for Dan Savage. The Toledo native and summer resident of Put-in-Bay, is also the curator of the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Museum on the island.
This past winter Savage logged 2,000 miles while assembling an exhibit of 125 classic duck decoys, antique duck calls and shotguns representing the history of duck hunting in the western basin of Lake Erie. No doubt, Savages’ enthusiasm was a major influence in securing the loan of many of the pieces. They are from some of the best private collections and some have never been on public display. Many are textbook examples of workmanship.
Decoy carving is one of the oldest native American art forms. This collections reflects treasures from the 1850’s to the 1960’s, with some of the duck calls dating back to the 1830’s. They will fascinate all who have an interest in duck hunting.
There are 31 private shooting clubs in the Western Basin of Lake Erie between Toledo and Sandusky. The exhibit includes memorabilia of some of the finest including Winous Point Shooting Club, the Demar Club and the Toussaint

Club. Artifacts from President Rutherford B. Hayes and Jay Cooke can also be viewed.
In addition to the duck decoys, duck calls and shotguns, some pieces of fine art are also included. Among them is “Setter on Point” by America’s greatest painter of hunting dogs, Edmund Henry Osthaus and “Sporting Still Life” by William H. Machen.
Dan Savages’ labor of love provides an opportunity for hunting, carving and birding enthusiasts to enjoy an exhibit of rare artifacts during the summer of 2016.
