systems. If I had to do any of that, I might have to seriously reconsider things. I’ve been depending on Tony and my friend Charlie Brown who takes care of this Put-in-Bay property for 40 years. I get to do what I do and enjoy life because of them in a lot of ways.” He still has plenty of groupies though and they’re still young.
Anne nods. “He has plenty of young woman coming on to him.” She grins at him. “He still looks good. Girls like that patina of wisdom and age that he has.” They exchange a silent communication between each other because these are clearly two people deeply committed to each other.
One of the changes Pat has taken on in the last few years is giving up drinking, which shocks a lot of people. “Well, you know when you’re drinking you’re having fun and feeling good, but then when you wake up in the morning, it’s now two or three days before you want to see anyone. I have this philosophy. When you’re young you should do everything you can: drink, sex, partying. As you get older and you naturally start to feel lousy, you have things to quit. Then you quit that thing

and you have a bunch of years to feel great again. You need to have things to quit!”
“That’s a very interesting philosophy,” Anne says with a laugh.
He nods and raises his water bottle to her. Quitting was hard for him. “You know, I live a life surrounded by drinking. And I enjoy that kind of life. Also, if someone offers me a glass of expensive wine, I’m not going to refuse to try it. It’s just that I will stop after that one glass.”
They’ve been traveling the world during those times that Pat isn’t performing as much. They’ve been on a Mediterranean cruise and to Sicily, Ireland, Spain, and France to name a few places. With age comes wisdom. “You’ve got these young people who are all excited about things and you learn when to bite your tongue,” Pat says. “I see where it all leads. That’s what old people always do to young people. Trying to tell them where it leads. Well, I’m not going to do that. I’m not going to be that guy. I’m biting my tongue.”
“We’re healthy and happy and enjoying ourselves,” Anne says. “That’s what is important. We’re going with the flow and learning to let life happen rather than trying to fight it.”
