The container plants on the patio – a hi- biscus and others – make it even more pleas- ant. Indoor/outdoor gardening has always been popular, but last summer it became even more popular. People who don’t have yards are doing more gardening on their decks and patios. “With everything going on this past year, they’ve learned to enjoy their yards and to get outside,” Corso said. “People have had the time to fall back in love with gardening, or they’re new to gardening and they’ve found out they love it. Hopefully, that will continue.”
Both garden centers saw an increase in demand for vegetable plants last summer.
Brown said early Spring is a good time of year to start seeds indoors for broccoli, cabbages, and lettuces, because they will do better in the cooler weather. He recommends waiting until a little later in the Spring to start peppers or tomatoes.
I plant herbs, but not tomatoes. My neigh- bors are much better at growing them than I am, and I’m grateful for their generosity.
My “backyard neighbor” is an accom- plished gardener, and I’m really looking for- ward to watching his plants grow and change. Right now, I’m wondering if the hundreds of bulbs I planted last autumn – my birthday pres- ent to myself – will end up being the crocuses, daffodils, and tulips I saw in my head. Judg- ing by the number of holes I saw dug in the garden, I think I might have actually bought pretty expensive food for the neighborhood squirrels.
