Hasselbach Meats Garners More Awards
Hasselbach Meats recently participated in the Ohio Association of Meat Processors convention in Columbus, Ohio. Members of this Association represent all aspects of the meat industry.
During their meeting industry members had a hands on session at the Ohio State meat science lab, trade show exhibits, and educational sessions pertaining to their businesses. They were treated to a banquet which served prime rib, pork loin, and half chicken prepared by one of their own members. The Association’s scholarship committee also awarded a total of
$12,000 to eight students.
An additional feature of the meeting was the members’ competition for recognition of their homemade products. Hasselbach Meats took the Grand Champion award for their BBQ baby back ribs. They also were recognized as a Champion for their hickory smoked bacon and summer sausage; received first place for smoked turkey and smoked brisket; and won the specialty class with their bacon wrapped chicken breast with asparagus and baby swiss cheese.
Hasselbach Meats is located at 4637 St Route 19, north of Fremont. Check out their gift boxes at hasselbachmeats.com. Think of them for your locally produced Easter Ham!
Historical Society Kicks Off Membership Drive
The 2020 membership campaign for new and renewed membership in the Catawba Island Historical Society Historical Society has begun.
Annual membership dues are a major source of funding to operate the Society’s Catawba Museum at Union Chapel and sponsor its biannual Cultural Speakers Program.
The museum is located in the iconic 1888 Union Chapel on East Porter Street at the north end of Catawba Island. It began its annual May to October operation in 2018. A year earlier, however, the Historical Society started a series of speakers about historical
subjects. Examples have ranged from the lives and customs of local Native Americans... to this area’s response to Prohibition... to the geology of Lake Erie’s Western Basin. A speaker is planned for Wednesday June 3, 2020 with the topic to be announced in the spring.
Koerpel explained that admission to both the Union Chapel Museum and Cultural Lectures is free because the Historical Society does not believe a financial barrier should exist between people and their past.
Two levels of annual Historical Society membership are available; the Historian at $25 and the Curator at $100 per year. A lifetime subscription to the Society’s Council of Nabagon is also available for a one time investment of $1000. More information can be obtained by calling the 419.967.5363 or on the web at www.catawbaislandhistoricalsociety.com.
The Museum will reopen for the 2020 season on Saturday, May 16. It operates from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month until mid-October.
