Meet Our Readers
Janet Killam, Kelleys Island
By Brenda Haas, Feature Writer
Janet Killam has quite a history with Kelleys Island. Her family began
visiting in the 1940s, and Janet arrived about a decade later. As a child,
she made forever friends, waterskied, swam, and jumped off table-type
rocks into the lake and quarries. A volunteer coordinator of Parsonage Resale
Shop, supporting Kelleys Island Historical Association, Janet now revisits the
past while “reviving and preserving an island’s treasure,” the Old Stone German Reformed Church and its historic Parsonage.
“Growing up summers on Kelleys Island was a most wondrous, fulfilling, learning experience,” said Janet. “Raising funds for our association’s island projects, and safeguarding the history for future generations, gives me a sense of purpose.”
A past marketing manager, Janet volunteers alongside “partners in crime” Jodie Smith and Sonia Taylor. Antique furniture, china, jewelry, art, and household items are donated, almost daily, from the mansions and homes on the island. Even a 1940s slot machine was once rescued from a basement. When not cruising around picking up and delivering resale items, Janet gardens, bikes, reads, and continues to enjoy most of the water activities she did as a child. She and her husband Michael have two daughters — Olivia and Jordan (Director of Kelleys Island Chamber of Commerce) — and three grandchildren.
“We’re providing services on the island that cannot be found anywhere else. Everything the Parsonage Resale Shop sells has a history,” concluded Janet. “We are always open to you.”
Offering pickup/delivery, the shop, at 206 Division Street, opens daily in the summer noon – 4 p.m., or by appointment. Visit Facebook or call Janet: 419-304-3095, Jodie: 419-350-1082, or Sonia: 419-202-8083.

Hello ~
...and, I wanted to take a few minutes to thank
all of the people who have been working so hard over the past year to help us get our lives back to normal. I especially want to single out a group that has faced some tremendous challenges. The United States Postal Service (USPS) employees who work at our local post offices were truly essential workers during the pandemic.
Rather than going shopping at a store, many of us ordered groceries, pet food, medications, clothing, home goods, and more, to be delivered. In addition to the normal mail, the USPS delivered many of these essentials to our homes so that we could stay safe.
This was not an easy task, especially during the holiday season. They worked many long days and weekends.
When we mailed the Spring Edition of Leisure Living Magazine in March, I saw firsthand just how great the service provided by the USPS can be. The day after we dropped the magazines off at the post office locations in our area, I began to hear from our readers.
Brenda from Lakeside commented about the desserts from Marblehead Galley on the cover. Later in the day, Cindy from Sandusky pulled her magazine
out of her purse to show me that it was already delivered.
