Artifacts Moved To Union Chapel Museum
What do you get when you combine 6 Catawba Volunteer Firefighters, with 4 members of the Catawba Island Historical Society and a Township Trustee? According to David Wonnell, the answer is a successful transfer of artifacts from the Ottawa City General Store to the soon to be opened Catawba Museum at Union Chapel.
Wonnell is a member of the Historical Society and volunteered to orchestrate the recent movement of articles gifted to it by Don Rhodes, proprietor of the General Store which closed in 2016.
Six of the Catawba’s firefighting crew provided trucks, a trailer and most of the muscle that was needed to get a wide variety of items to their new Union Chapel home a quarter mile away on E. Porter Street.
Also assisting with the move were Catawba Township Trustee, Bill Rofkar and Historical Society board members Cindy Gunderson, Rick Thomas and Craig Koerpel.
The Catawba Island Historical Society, a federal tax-exempt nonprofit corporation, was created in January 2017. It entered a long term lease with the Township Trustees to use the Union Chapel as a museum that will be open to the public without charge. The Chapel was
established as a non-denominational church in 1888. It was ultimately deeded to Catawba Island Township and has not been used for regular religious services since the early 1980’s.
The Township began renovation of the structure last year. Announcement of an official summer opening date for the Museum is expected shortly.
