Put-in-Bay Will Host
A New Music Festival
By Jerry Mix, Feature Writer
If a music festival is one of your favorite things, be sure to mark June 10 on your calendar. That’s the date for the Put-in-Bay Music Festival to be held on the lawn at Perry’s Monument.
The Put-in Bay festival is slated to kickoff at 11 am and run until approximately 8 pm. A wide assortment of musical groups are scheduled to make South Bass Island, the home of Put-in-Bay, ring with plenty of music.
The Oh Chays will start things off at 11 am, followed by the Flying Jays. The Oh Chays are a husband and wife folk duo out of Port Alma, Ontario, while the Flying Jays are a five-piece folk group based in Washington, D.C.
Emily Keener, who was a finalist on the NBC TV show “The Voice,” will
follow the Oh Chays and the
Flying Jays. “We are really
excited to have Emily Keener as part of our concert series,” said Peter Huston, an island ambassador who works for the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce. Keener has a new album out that music lovers will be excited to hear about.
These musical events are to be held on the 25-acre park that surrounds the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. All of the musical performances will be free to the public.
“This is going to be not just a blue grass fes- tival, as we wanted to have a broad spectrum of music that will appeal to a wide audience,” said Perry’s Park Superintendent Barbara Fearon.
She indicated the festival will include music ranging from the blues, zydeco, grassroots and jazz as well as some rock mixed into the day’s performances.
Looking at the entire musical event, Huston said, “This is a brand new event for us. We are really excited because we are working with the
National Park Service to be able to have this type of event on the National Park Service lawn, which has never been done before at Put-in-Bay.”
Actually, the day is going to consist of a lot more than just the musical events. For example, there will be cornhole tournaments held during the day. There will be two American Cornhole Association sanctioned tour- naments, one for singles and the other for two-play- er teams. Pre-registration is required to enter the tour-
Bob Gatewood, who will
also be serving as the MC
for the concert, will be per-
forming at 2 pm. Next on the
Put-in-Bay stage will be the
Chatfield Boys, a blue grass
band. “This is a really top-notch band that will be picking up the pace as the day goes along,” Huston said.
At 4 pm Mo’Mojo, an Ohio based zydeco band, will be coming to the island stage, courtesy of the Ohio Arts Council. Huston remembers that Mo’Mojo was on the island a couple of years ago and provided outstanding music.
Strung Like a Horse, a high energy blue grass band that also mixes rock into its program, will take the stage around 5 pm. Finally, music lov- ers will be watching the Floor Walkers, which Huston described as the closest band to a high energy rock band on the day’s entire lineup.

During the day, the musical groups the Oh Chays and Mo’Mojo will be conducting music workshops for all ages of festival attendees. Park rangers will be on hand to provide information and programs. Families can expect a living histo- ry display centered around the park’s carronade and its longboat.
In addition, the visitors coming to Put-in-Bay that day will have the opportunity to be part of field games for all ages.
