Meet Our Readers
Jim Ervin, Sandusky
By Sharon Sweda, Feature Writer
Folks looking for an alternative mode of touring the lake front city of Sandusky
will want to look into Sandusky Segwave which is a Segway tour company that
arrived in March of 2017. Located in the heart of downtown Sandusky, Sandusky
Segwave was started by Jim Ervin and his husband, Dick Ries. Ervin was a seasoned tour guide in Columbus, Ohio prior to the couple’s Northern Ohio venture.
“We are co-owners of the business,” tells Ervin, “but I am the operational partner. It is because Dick maintains his career as a professor that I am able to be the hands-on guy.”
In Columbus Ervin also conducted occasional dessert tours for Columbus Food Adventures. “The dessert tours were offered on Saturday afternoons. We traveled in a van that transported 12-15 people on a dessert excursion coordinated to include the best desserts in the area,” Ervin explained.
The Sandusky operation is located within the State Theater building and offers the option of one or two hour tours for groups of eight riders. The excursions have been touted in several Ohio magazines and helps Sandusky to spread the word that the city is “more than Cedar Point”.
“I view Dick and I as ambassadors for the community. Our goal is to help to support downtown. We have gotten very creative with weather challenges and regardless of climate, we keep our lights on and contribute to the vibrancy of the downtown district,” says Ervin.
Some are surprised that winter tours can provide another unique way to enjoy the city. Daytime tours are replaced by evening tours. The Black Friday tour is a route that includes seasonal lights and displays.

Hello ,
.....can’t wait! It’s almost here. My favorite time of
the year for my Foodie Spirit!
We’ll start with raspberries, those wonderful
little antioxidants that are nuggets of sweetness, lovingly picked and packaged with care. I find mine most often at Schwan Orchards on Catawba.
Next up are plump, sweet tomatoes. I love the heirlooms at Quinstock Orchards on the East Catawba Road. A bonus there are their bunches of freshly harvested herbs, when available.
We have waited all winter for Catawba peaches! Yayyy! That season starts around July 4. Find several varieties at Schwans on West Catawba Rd. All this summer deliciousness will hold me until sweet corn,
Established 2005
melons, squash, pumpkins and apples! Yum
Happy Father’s Day this month to all the dad’s
out there. We hope you have a great day!
Watch for a new, occasional column on the
lighter side coming in July.
Thank you to the Kelleys Island Chamber of
Commerce for the recent recognition. I appreciate the honor and your group is always so helpful.
Have a Fabulous 4th of July! LeisurelyYours -
