Visit Art Walks In Downtown
Port Clinton And Sandusky
The Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council sponsors art walk events the fourth Thursday of every month from May through September. The center of the event is the in- tersection of Madison and Second streets, with some vendors on Perry Street as well.
“We have a lot of different local art. I like that it changes every month,” organizer Jen Nickel said. Each month’s event has a dif- ferent theme. June’s is “Let’s Get Nautical.”
The events are the same nights as the singer-songwriter showcases at Slater’s Mad- ison Street Pub. The Clinton House has live music each art walk night as well. Shoppers might stroll by a single guitarist or other mu- sical artist. One local favorite is the Ottawa County Bluegrass Band, which performs in a lot on Second Street east of Madison Street in front of a mural featuring a warbler bird.
Nickel said she loves the variety of vendors, which includes
painters, photographers, jewelers, carvers, sculptors, and more. Some vendors come from more than an hour away to participate.
“We also are looking more toward students getting involved, selling their art- work,” she said. This year, the Imagine Art Studio at RVI, a non-profit that serves adults who have developmental disabilities, will be represented at the art walks.
In Sandusky, the art walks are held the first Thursday of each month in Wash- ington Park. “The original intent, fashioned after the Gallery Hop in the Columbus Short North, was to bring people to shop and eat in downtown Sandusky, and I believe we’ve had some impact on the rejuvenation of our waterfront,” organizer Judy Corso said.
Those events are sponsored by the Merry-Go-Round Museum and the Wight- man Weber Foundation. “Each month we showcase anywhere from 25 to 50 local artists, including authors, jewelers, painters, print makers, musicians, and foodies, just to name a few. Each month this year we will be featuring a non-profit, starting in June with The Volunteer Center.”
Both events run from 5 to 8 p.m.
Port Clinton Lighthouse
Visitors to Water Works Park in Port Clinton can now tour the recently restored lighthouse, which was originally built in 1896. Docents will give guided tours every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through Sept. 3, with special tour dates on July 4, Sept. 4 and Oct. 14. Hours are from noon to 4 p.m.
The Port Clinton Lighthouse Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 5.
The lighthouse was decommissioned in the late 1920s, and was moved in 1952. It remained in storage for about 60 years.
