Milan Chautauqua, June 27-July 1
“Bringing History to Life”
By JD Noll, Feature Writer
Excitement is mounting as residents of Milan, Ohio prepare for June’s Ohio Chautauqua event.
The unique five day presentation, modeled after those in Lake Chautauqua, New York, com- bines music, history and education along with audience participation for an unforgettable ex- perience. There will be day and evening events ranging from lectures and workshops to theatrical and musical performances. “Local professional musicians will provide traditional musical tal- ent, while the schools will use this event as part of their teaching curriculum,” Milan Chautauqua organizer Dan Frederick emphasizes.
Along with other community locations, the main stage will be located on the historic town square, June 27- July 1. This year’s predetermined theme is “The Natural World” with topics and characterizations on natural history, literature, Scientific Teaching Methodology, ethics and the environment. In addition to Ohio history enthu- siasts, Chautauqua will be of interest to the area’s rural residents and those concerned with the en- vironment as well as Lake Erie’s natural beauty,
according to the committee’s application.
With major financial support from the Lange Trust of the Sandusky Library, the nod was giv- en to Milan. Lange Trust Chairman Sarah Prout says, “Ohio Chautauqua fits perfectly with our mission to provide free, cultural and educational
opportunities to the residents of Erie County.” Milan was selected as one of four Ohio cities chosen to host this year’s historical, cultural event which organizers have been planning for about two years. “We were delighted by Milan’s commit- ment to its town center and its rich cultural her- itage assets,” Melissa Ricksecker of the Ohio Hu- manities Council said. Produced in conjunction with the Milan Township Trustees, the dedicated local steering committee is comprised of indi- viduals from a diverse mix of community orga- nizations: Edison Local Schools, Village of Milan, Milan-Berlin Library District, MilanChamber of Commerce, Lake Erie Shores and Islands Visitors Bureau, Milan Museum and Edison Birthplace
Association.
