Visit The Jewel Of The Port
In Lorain

One of the most beautiful lighthouses on the Great Lakes is located in Lorain. The Lorain West Breakwall Lighthouse, known as “The Jewel of the Port,”® was built in 1917.
The historic structure was decommissioned by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1965. At that time, they planned to demolish it, but volunteers from Lorain rallied to its rescue.
“It was set to be torn down. But, due to the weather conditions in the fall of 1966, they could not demolish it. This gave time for people to organize to save it,” said Carolyn Sipkovsky. Sipkovsky is a member of Lorain Lighthouse Foundation, Inc. The foundation owns and operates the lighthouse.
The Lorain Lighthouse was built in 1917 and was decommissioned in 1965.
