Welcoming The Holidays
It’s finally holiday time! Even though the celebrations will look different than they have in other years, they can still be wonder- ful. I wonder if we will see more elaborate Christmas light displays than we have seen in the past?
The Toledo Zoo Lights Before Christmas is always popular. It’s planned for Nov. 20 through Dec. 31. Check the website to see if reservations are needed. The Cleveland Met- roparks Zoo pres-
ents Wild Winter
Lights from Nov.
19 through Jan. 3.
Many com-
munities have
planned their
traditional holi-
day season kick-
off events – but
please be sure to
touch base with
the organizers
before making
plans. I love the
ways our com-
munities cele-
brate in different
ways – from Port Clinton’s Operation Loud Rudolph parade to Oak Harbor’s Olde Fash- ioned Christmas. Santa will be there! Please
shop locally. Small Business Saturday
is Nov. 28.
Port Clinton’s
New Year’s Eve Walleye Drop will be virtual, as will the Burn- ing Snowman Festival in late
February.
State Theatre And FSO Symphony Updates
This year was unexpectedly difficult for the Sandusky State Theatre and the Firelands Symphony Orchestra. In June, a storm de- stroyed the back part of the theatre. Chris Parthemore, the executive director of the Sandusky State Theatre, said he’s grateful that no one was injured.
He said the reconstruction process has several phases. “Our big push right now is to get a roof back on the audito- rium before winter so we can protect the rest of the building before it gets cold- er. That is on schedule and should be finished by ear- ly December,” he said. The board hopes to select an ar- chitectural firm in Novem- ber, and then develop a long-term plan and budget in the early part of 2021. “We’ve been really fortu- nate so far that we really
haven’t hit any snags.”
The auditorium is a reg- istered historical landmark, and certain guidelines must be followed to maintain the historical aspects. However, the back of the building is more modern, and thoseguidelinesdon’thavetoapplytothe reconstruction. Parthemore said this allows the board the opportunity to make that part of the building more user-friendly than it had been, while considering the needs of the the-
ater and the community.
Parthemore said two of the theater’s
treasures – the chandelier and the 1928 Page Organ Company pipe organ – were not dam- aged by the storm.
