Friends Of The Cemeteries - In Port Clinton
By Jerry Mix, Feature Writer
In Port Clinton, a small group of women are making a real difference taking care of the city’s two cemeteries, Lakeview and Riverview.
Headed by President Dana Alvarez, this group has been highly successful in obtaining grant money from organizations like the Stenson Foundation. They also hold their own fund rais- ing activities like their recent chicken bar-b-que event and then use that money for the beautifica- tion of the cemeteries.
Alvarez and her small group of partners (eight ladies to be exact) launched their organization, called Port Clinton Friends of the Cemetery, in 2008. Then Port Clinton Mayor Debbie Hymore- Tester suggested that she would like to see a group formed that dealt with cemetery concerns. “That’s how it took off,” Alvarez said.
And take off it truly did. Alvarez estimated that the group has raised over $150,000 for cem- etery work. Major projects like paving the roads in Riverview Cemetery to installing landscaping projects, putting in new trash cans and install- ing new windows in the Lakeview mausoleum were undertaken. Paving the roads in Riverview Cemetery was done in phases and cost a total of $70,000. When we talked, the group was wait- ing for a new black iron fence to be installed at Lakeview.
When the group was first organized, they worked with the city to eliminate problems and to develop a good working relationship. This enabled them to take on and complete the beau- tification projects that now exist between the two cemeteries. “We had landscaping put in and now we proudly maintain that landscaping on an on going basis,” Alvarez pointed out.
“Your cemeteries need to look good,” Alvarez said. “Cemeteries are just as important as your parks where people go to play, it’s sacred ground.”
Here is the group’s Mission Statement. “To insure that the property in and around the param- eters of the cemeteries are always worthy of those who lie within.”
