Small Business Saturday, November 26 -- Shop Local, Shop Small
With all the “Black Friday” and “Cyber Mon- day” hype encouraging shoppers to spend money at malls, big box retailers and on-line, save yourself the aggravation of crowds and parking by shopping “small” at local com- munity stores. You often can find similar or better deals while getting expert advice from professionals. Besides, these shop owners may be your neighbors or friends. Just think of what you would do if they were no longer in business in your town. The American Inde- pendent Business Alliance says, “Each $100 spent at local independents generates $45 of secondary local spending, compared to $14 for a big box chain. Independent retailers re- turn more than three times as much money per dollar of sales than chain competitors, and buying remotely on the web creates al- most no local benefit.”
The Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce is adding an interesting twist two weeks pri- or to Small Busi- ness Saturday by offering a shop- pers punch card which in- dividuals can take to 10 lo- cal businesses to have validated. Then from November 26 to December 3, enjoy a 10% discount at any of the retailers listed within the program. Additionally, once completed, the card can be filled out and entered into a drawing for a $40 Chamber gift card. Another plus on November 26, the Chamber will do free gift
wrapping at their office from 12-5 pm for those participating in Small Business Satur- day. For information visit www.portclinton- chamber.com.
What Is 20 Feet Long And Weighs 600 Pounds?
Do something uniquely different this New Year’s Eve. At the walleye capital of the world, bundle up and visit Port Clinton’s 20th annual Walleye Madness at Midnight Wall- eye Drop, featuring “Wylie”. He is a 20 foot long, 600 pound fiberglass walleye descend- ing from the sky, counting the seconds un- til 2017. “Wylie” is hoisted by a crane to celebrate the countdown. This family friendly event features day long activities with down- town merchants and restaurants capped off with a dazzling midnight fireworks display.
