School of Music, Topilow is the music direc- tor and founding conductor of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra and also conducts the orches- tra at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In the summer, he serves as conductor of the Na- tional Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, Colorado.
The Cleveland Pops, about to start its 21st season, is the result of finding a niche in the Cleveland music scene. “The Cleveland Or- chestra is, of course, one of the greatest or- chestras of the world,” he said, “but since they don’t have a pops series we were able to fill that gap.” The Pops orchestra has produced three CDs, the most recently a 20th-anniver- sary commemorative CD.
Topilow, a clarinetist, and his brother Ar- thur, a pianist, also have three CDs.
He said he will perform as clarinetist for the FSO Veterans Day and Christmas con- certs. Don’t expect a run-of-the-
mill performance by any standards
– Topilow likes to play one of his trademark colored clarinets: red,
green, white and blue, or a mix-
ture. “Danny Boy on the green
clarinet; Stars and Stripes with the
piccolos on a red, white, and blue
clarinet, all in good fun!”
Topilow is happy with the way his first 10 years have gone with the Firelands Symphony Orches- tra.
Would he like to spend 10 more there?
“Sounds good to me.”

Musical Arts Series In Port Clinton
For more than 15 years, the Musical Arts Series in Port Clinton has brought a wide variety of top-rated musicians to the area. The programs are amazingly accessible, let- ting audiences enjoy performances that they might have to travel to a much larger city to enjoy.
They are inexpensive – tickets are $15 – and there is no charge for parking at the ven- ue, the Firelands Presbyterian Church. After each performance, the audience is invited to a reception where they can meet the artists.
The season begins with the Oct. 7 ap- pearance of “Simple Gifts,” an ensemble that performs world music on a variety of ethnic instruments. Visit musicalartsportclinton.com for more information.
