Meet Our Readers
Kristin Stanford, PhD - South Bass Island
By Maggie Kelch, Feature Writer
People come to South Bass Island for many reasons. Kristin
Stanford came for a snake - the Lake Erie Watersnake.
Although people know Kristin as the “Island Snake Lady,” her official title is Education & Outreach Coordinator for the F. T. Stone Laboratory. Stone Lab, on Gibraltar Island, is Ohio State University’s
island campus and research laboratory.
Kristin enjoys the challenge of coordinating the logistics for their educational programs. “It’s fun.
Every day is an adventure. You never know what you’re walking into,” she said.
Kristin came to South Bass as a graduate student from Northern Illinois University in 2001, working on a Lake Erie Watersnake research project. At that time, the snake was listed as federally endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Since they live only around the western Lake Erie islands, the snakes could be gone forever if their population didn’t rebound. She split her
time between Ohio and Illinois for several years.
Kristin moved to South Bass and became a full-time research associate for Stone Lab in 2003.
She coordinated research, education and outreach programs as part of the recovery plan for the
Watersnake.

Hello-
.....and, just like that, fall is right around the corner.
We have a few more weeks of summer to enjoy here along the beautiful shores of Lake Erie. But soon, we’ll be celebrating Labor Day.
While Labor Day is widely celebrated, there is another holiday right around the corner that many of you, our readers, should know more about. The first Sunday in September is officially recognized as Grandparents Day. This year, it will be held on Sunday, September 8.
In case you didn’t know, it’s not a holiday that was invented to sell cards and flowers. It is a “real” holiday. (Although it is not honored as a Federal Holiday.)

Congress passed legislation establishing Grandparents Day and it was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter in 1978.
Organizers of Grandparents Day activities emphasize the importance of interaction between generations. They are challenging everyone to engage with another generation on September 8. And most importantly, they want us to share our time.
So happy Grandparents Day to all of our “Grand” and “Great” readers!
