Students Experience Local Wildlife Refuge
Friends of the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge (FONWR) was awarded a grant through the Ottawa County Community Foundation to support transportation costs so that students from schools across Ottawa Coun- ty would be able to explore the outdoors and learn about conservation at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. As the school year drew to a close, FONWR was pleased to reportthattheyprovidedsixfieldtripsformorethan200 young people.
What’s the difference between a wetland and marsh? What role do wetlands play in our environment and the creatures that call it home? These are just some of the questions that staff from Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge (ONWR) addressed with the students. Through hands- on learning experiences, including hiking the dikes and tram tours to see the diversity of wildlife that exists at the ONWR, young learners gained an appreciation for the
influence wetlands have on our quality of health and the health of the environment. Staff from ONWR explained why conservation is so important and how restoration in the Lake Erie marshes is an ongoing effort.
The Ottawa County Community Foundation (OCCF) was pleased to fund this project through their competitive grant process. Distributions from OCCF unrestricted funds are available annually to meet community needs.
