Vintage Base Ball at Hayes Museums
See how baseball was played in its early days with the Spiegel Grove Squires, the vintage team at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.
The Squires bring to life base ball – as it was spelled back then – in the 1860s, when the sport became organized with standard rules of play for clubs.
Members of the Spiegel Grove Squires are volunteers. They have studied and learned the methods of play used in the 1860s, including playing bare-handed and using a bat that looks more like a broom handle. Players are called ballists, and they wear period-style uniforms and adopt the language of 19th-century base ball during their matches, as games were called at the time.
The Spiegel Grove Squires are the vintage base ball team at the Hayes Presidential Library and Mu- seum. They wear period uniforms and use the rules of the game as it was played around the Civil War, when it was first rising to popularity.

Union Chapel Museum Continued from page 7
By the following January a Board of Trustees had been created, and exploratory discussions had begun with the Township about using Union Chapel as a museum and cultural center. Agreement was reached in the summer of 2017 for CIHS to lease the Chapel following extensive renovation of the 130 year old structure by the Township.
Thanks to community support in the form of member- ship subscriptions to the Catawba Island Historical Soci- ety, there is no admission charge to visit the Museum.
