The Nature Conservancy Is Restoring Area Wetlands
Since the late 1990s, the rate and severity of harmful algal blooms in Ohio have been increasing steadily, putting human health and Ohio’s econ- omy at risk. Launched last summer, and led in part by The Nature Conservancy, Gov- ernor DeWine’s H2Ohio Fund aims to address the state’s wa- ter quality issues.
H2Ohio provides funding
for water quality improve- ment projects, including nature-based solutions like creating and restoring wet- lands and floodplains—for which The Nature Conser- vancy advocated strongly.
The Nature Conser- vancy’s work to restore Sandusky Bay is one of the first to receive support through H2Ohio. The ef-
fort is aimed at reducing harmful algal bloom se- verity through a number of innovative methods involving a mix of man- made and natural infra- structure. These efforts will create a better-func- tioning bay ecosystem that will encourage the growth of native wet- land vegetation and help
alleviate the occurrence of harmful algal blooms.
H2Ohio is also provid- ing funding to The Nature Conservancy to restore 137 acres of coastal wetland at Maumee Bay State Park. Through a partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, The Nature Conservancy will improve water level man- agement in order to create a healthy, well-functioning wetland system that not only helps to clean water, but also creates important coastal wildlife habitat for birds and other plant and animal species.
Visit The Nature Con- servancy’s Great Egret Marsh Preserve
Located in the heart of a complex of marshes on the Marblehead peninsula, the 150-acre Great Egret Marsh Preserve boasts classic Lake Erie marsh- land, blanketed each sum- mer with water lotus and teaming with wildlife. The preserve is a haven for wa- terfowl and wading birds— including great egrets, which can congregate there
