which TNC has been care- fully restoring.
“We’ve planted more than 15,000 native trees, enhanced fish habitat through improved water management efforts, and recently installed a nesting tower to attract ospreys,” said Matt Kovach, Lake Erie coasts and islands project manager.
Another place to con- sider exploring up-close is TNC’s Kitty Todd Preserve, about 15 miles west of Tole- do. The 1,400-acre preserve is considered a centerpiece of the Oak Openings Re- gion—a globally rare eco- system composed of more than 130 square miles in Northwest Ohio. The land consists largely of grass-
lands like oak savanna and prairie.
“You can see things here that you can’t see any- where else in the world,” said Steve Woods, TNC’s Oak Openings project man- ager.
TNC manages seven preserves in Ohio that are free and open to the public year-round. In addition to
these preserves, TNC has helped to secure the pro- tection of other well-known natural areas throughout Ohio.
“The social and econom- ic prosperity of our commu- nities depend on the value that our natural areas pro- vide,” Woods said.
