Special Exhibit To Examine Patriotism
From July through May, the Hayes Presidential Li- brary & Museums will offer special events and a World War I exhibit that examine what it means to be patriotic and how protesting might fit into the ideals of patriotism.
Patriotism & Protest will offer several events to en- gage the public, including veterans, in discussions about historic and current issues related to patriotism.
“In the midst of heated public opinions on NFL pro- tests during the national anthem, we hope to create a dialogue that will help citizens understand the differing views on what it means to be patriotic,” Curator Dustin McLochlin said.
The special exhibit “A Family of Service: The Hayeses in World War I,” opens July 27 and will explore America’s involvement in the “Great War” through the eyes of the Hayes Family.
The exhibit will cover boot camp, protests against the war, the war at sea, the war on land, commanding the troops and navy and tending to the wounded. It will re-
main open through May 27.
“The members of this family served in nearly every
capacity of the war effort, from the Navy to the Western Front to training camps stateside,” Associate Curator of Artifacts Kevin Moore said. “The breadth of their experi- ences offers us an excellent vehicle with which to discuss the first world war during its centennial.”
The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is work- ing with the local VFW and Birchard Public Library to offer a book discussion and movie viewing as part of the Patriotism and Protest program. Events scheduled so far are:
• Sept. 9 –Book discussion on “Born on the Fourth of July” by Ron Kovic. 2 p.m. at the VFW Post 2947, 204 Birchard Ave., Fremont. Up to 50 copies of this book will be given to veterans for free. Curator Dustin McLochlin and veteran Joe Eberly will lead the discussion. For infor- mation or to obtain a free book for veterans, contact Mc- Lochlin at 419-332-2081, ext. 230.
• Nov. 8 – Viewing of film “Hacksaw Ridge” and dis- cussion. 1:30 p.m. at the Birchard Public Library, 423 Croghan St., Fremont. McLochlin and Kevin Lause, li- brary assistant at the Birchard Public Library, will lead the discussion.
