Spring 2016
February’s balmy temperatures made way for Lake Erie’s springtime sights and sounds. It’s time to get outside, enjoy nature and get fit. Whether strolling your neighborhood, go- ing to the gym or exploring the parks, it will be enjoyable and refreshing. Parks are amaz- ing places!
Erie County MetroParks
Wonderful places to explore and find enrichment are found in the Erie County MetroParks. With 10 parks and preserves covering 3300 acres, there are wide ranging opportunities for everyone. See the following locations and their communities: Birmingham School MetroPark, Birmingham Castalia Quarry MetroPark, Castalia
DuPont Marsh State Nature Preserve, Huron East Sandusky Bay MetroPark, Sandusky Edison Woods MetroPark, Berlin Heights Hoffman Forest MetroPark, Berlin Heights James H. McBride Arboretum, Huron Osborn MetroPark, Huron
Pelton MetroPark, Sandusky The Coupling MetroPark, Milan
The James H. McBride Arboretum, Huron, named after Bowling Green State University’s first dean of the Firelands campus, offers 57 acres of lakes, trails, meadows and wood-
lands with formal and ornamental gardens. Take a good look at the native Ohio wild- flowers and plantings to see what’s peaking out from Fall’s fallen leaves, and to see what might be right for your yard. Blooming crab apple trees are spectacular in May and can be viewed best from the Deering Family Ter- race.
Get out and try any number of continu- ing fitness classes including Zumba, Tai Chi and Jazzercise. Gaze at the stars while on a “Full Moon Hike” in March and watch ea- gles soar during the “Bald Eagle Watch” in April. Learn how to fish and make fishing lures for summertime outings.
Pick up a new hobby. Learn abstract and watercolor painting or drips and dribbles bottle decorating. Want something more challenging? Then, try disc golf, archery or kayaking. Become heart healthy by taking a weekly “Walk with the Doc” while gaining valuable health related information.
Many of these activities are free or nom- inally priced, and conveniently offered throughout the county. If necessary be sure to pre-register!
Earth Day Extravaganza
Celebrate Earth Day, April 24 from 11 am-4 pm at Osborn MetroPark, Huron. In collaboration with various civic and non- profit organizations, there will be a number of vendors and exhibits featuring recycled art, bee keeping, archery, green shopping and more.
