“I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day...when it’s cold outside, I’ve got the month of May.” -The Temptations: “My Girl”
May, full of sunshine and perhaps just a few cloudy days, is the gateway to summer here in Ohio. Along the lakeshore, boats are being launched, cottages are undergoing spring cleaning, island ferries are running, and locals and visitors alike are looking forward to sun and fun. What is there to do culturally at the lake as summer unfolds? Read on, and be inspired by the wealth of opportunities to enjoy the arts along Ohio’s north coast!
The Sound of Music
Fifty years ago Julie Andrews mesmerized the world with her performance in one of the most-loved musicals of all time. Whether “Maria” was singing alone in the Alps, Do- Re-Me-ing with the children in her care, or reciting a few of her Favorite Things, she shared the joys and power of music with us all. So long, farewell to 1965...
...and fast-forward to summer 2015, Ohio’s north coast. From Toledo to Cleveland and so many venues in-between, the lakeshore is
alive with the sound of music! Travel west to the Huntington Center and be rocked by Rod Stewart...cruise to our Erie Islands and dance to live bands... head to Port Clinton for great concerts during the “Walleye Fest”...travel back in time with Huron Playhouse’s “West Side Story” or let the “Best of Motown” at the Huron Boat Basin energize you under the stars... drop anchor in Vermilion and enjoy its “Third Thursday” music fest...travel a bit inland to verandah concerts at Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont...sail on to Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland and “get your country on” with Kenny Chesney. From the lake to all shores, our north coast offers music for everyone this summer!
Day is Done
Originally played by the Army bugler at dusk to bid the troops goodnight, the sounding of “Taps” has become the ultimate gesture of honoring the troops who have given their lives for our country. It’s a haunting melody, guaranteed to cause chills to run down the spine after just the first three notes. A lone bugler plays it clearly yet softly, lingering on each of its 24 somber notes as our eyes fill with tears and lumps form in our throats.
