Put-In-Bay Winery Is A Toast To Island History
By Rene Mihalic, Feature Writer
In 2010 the Put-in-Bay Winery opened its door, completing an historic circle back to Valentine Doller. Doller was an island entrepreneur, mayor and postmaster, who also operated the first Put-in-Bay Winery in the 1800s. Doller’s historic estate, situated at 392 Bayview Drive, is now home to the current Put- in-Bay Winery. The home’s original wood structure was built about 1859; Doller then added the brick Italianate mansion approximately 1883. After the last Doller family member passed in 1974 the estate was purchased by the Heindenreich fam- ily in 1978. The Heindenreichs enjoyed the home until selling it in 2005 to the McCann family, whose heritage on the island dates back several generations.

The McCanns feared, if sold, the mansion would be demolished, taking with it significant island history. The estate was turned into a museum with hopes it would support itself, which it did
The McCanns wanted the water front-
age of the property to add to their busi-
ness portfolio, which includes the neigh-
boring Crew’s Nest Marina. Their plan was to sell the house, however, when appraised the property was deemed more valuable without the house.
