Marsha Baumert, South Bass Island
By Nancy Heller, Feature Writer
Following a successful career as a travel agent, and many years living in Florida and raising two sons, Marsha Baumert is happy to be back on South Bass Island. Baumert’s parents bought a cottage on the island in the 1960’s, where the family spent many summers. Marsha has since inherited the cottage and she and her
husband now spend April-October on the island. This year, the Baumerts may be a bit delayed in their annual early-April arrival on the island; their son and daughter-in-law are expecting twin baby girls due March 28!
Summers are anything but relaxed for Baumert, the manager of the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society (LEIHS) Resale Shop and board member of LEIHS. About four years ago, Baumert donated some items to the resale shop. One of the volunteers asked her if she’d be interested in helping out and Baumert agreed. She began volunteering and was soon offered the position of shop manager.
Marsha’s enthusiasm for her work and the resale shop is clear. She has many stories about islanders and visitors who have donated or purchased items throughout the years. With limited shopping options on the island, Baumert says the resale shop tries to be all things to all people. “In the early spring, lots of fishermen stop in to check out what we have. The international students who work on the island during the summer need things like silverware and pots and pans.” Last summer, a woman approached her with a very urgent request. “She asked me if we had any men’s underwear,” Baumert laughed. “Her husband was just a little embarrassed!”
Baumert is also a self-taught artist whose work has been displayed in a local gallery and in the museum shop. “My mother was a wonderful artist, and I took art classes in Florida,” she said. In 2018, she and other area artists painted local scenes on wood cut from a historic tree in DeRivera Park. The paintings were auctioned as part of a successful fundraiser for LEIHS.
The Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Resale Shop is open 11-5 Friday-Sunday during April and seven days a week May-mid-October; check their Facebook page for updates and details. “We are a little hard to find, as we are tucked back behind the museum,” Baumert said. The LEIHS appreciates Leisure Living Magazine’s coverage of the history and events of South Bass Island and Put-in-Bay, and the exposure to unique places like the LEIHS Resale Shop.
