Meet Our Readers
Teri Betzenheimer Behrends, Port Clinton & Kelleys Island

Teri Betzenheimer Behrends is this issue’s reader profile. Teri is an
active woman who resides in Port Clinton but was born on Kelleys Island and continues to spend summer weekends in her birthplace. She was a resident of Kelleys Island until eighth grade.
“My mother died young,” she explained. “My dad’s employment changed when I was ready for high school, so he moved our family to Sandusky where I attended and graduated from Sandusky St. Mary’s.”
Like many folks who grow up and move away from their hometown, Teri’s roots have lured her back. She spends time serving on the board for Kelleys Island Historical Society. She has served nearly a decade and for the past 20 years, it is Teri’s quilting work that is displayed at the museum throughout the season as raffle tickets are sold for chances to win the quilt. The lucky winner is drawn on Treasure Island Day which falls the weekend after Labor Day and is recognized as the island’s official garage sale day.
“I dedicate each year’s quilt in honor of or in the memory of someone in my family,” Betzenheimer Behrends shared. It is noted on each quilt.
On the mainland, Teri and her now deceased golden retriever, Abbey spent many years visiting Firelands’ Hospice where Abbey was a therapy dog. Abbey proudly wore an employee badge with her photo on it and spent time visiting patients. Teri’s other dog, Morgan, who loves to go to the beach can be seen visiting Kelleys Island on weekends with Teri.
Betzenheimer Behrends confirmed her appreciation for Leisure Living Magazine. “It is a great resource,” she stressed. “It keeps me informed whether I am in Port Clinton or back at Kelleys.”

remember the powerful voice of Maureen McGovern and her many movie theme songs of our youth? Perhaps her most memorable and inspirational work was “Morning After” from the 1972 movie “Poseidon Adventure”. Maureen, like many of us, has evolved and is now using her vocal skills to also soothe the spirits of the sick. Read about this chapter of her life story, authored by Rene Mihalik, on page 9.
