Meet Our Readers
Dick & Cathie Schuster Sandusky, Ohio
By Brenda Haas, Feature Writer
Dick Schuster retired in 1997, but most days he still
visits Perkins Restaurant and Bakery to grab a muffin
and chat with employees, some of whom have worked
with the family business for decades. The Sandusky restaurant on Milan Road is now owned by son Steven.
“For 55 years, we’ve been blessed with the best help you can get,” said Dick. His wife Cathie believes her husband’s positive attitude is his best quality. In college, Dick started as a dishwasher at a Perkins franchise and was quickly promoted. In 1966, the young, married couple arrived at the bank with just a newborn and $300. Asked why they should receive a loan to buy the Sandusky Perkins, Dick responded, optimistically, “I have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”
Supportive of area schools, Dick hired generations of families over the years. Students who worked at the restaurant learned cleanliness pays, as he often hid a $20 bill under the appliances. The hardworking employee who found it got to keep it.
When asked the key to success, Dick concluded, “You have to be honest. You have to treat your customers as guests in your home, and, most importantly, treat your help with respect.”
The recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the Ohio Restaurant Association, Dick advocates for Give Kids the World and helped to form the Sandusky area’s earliest soccer league and a tourism organization.

Gracious Living for the 50+ Generation
On Lake Erie
Established 2005
Hello ~
...and, welcome back! The past few months
have been challenging. There’s been a lot we’ve missed as we’ve worked to stay safe. Yet, we Boomers are resilient. We rise to the occasion and making sacrifices to help our families, friends and neighbors.
No matter what the world situation throws our way, or what adversity the spring brought us, there are things we’ll always have - our fighting spirit, our senses of humor, and our love of nature.
Living on Lake Erie, we are especially blessed. Its beaches with shells, stones and glass give us an
opportunity to search for treasures. Its abundance of fish gives us recreation and delicious meals. And, watching the changing waves, billowy clouds and serene sunsets gives us peace of mind.
With summer coming, we can look forward to once again enjoying Lake Erie and all that this area has to offer us.
