I recently attended
the season opening
of the Catawba Island
Historical Society
Museum, and I was
impressed. The former
Union Chapel was
bright and airy, and the
exhibits were interesting
and well-designed. We
are lucky enough to
have plenty of wonderful
choices when it comes to
exploring local history,
including the Keeper’s
House, the Ottawa
County Historical
Museum, the Port Clinton
Lighthouse Conservancy,
the Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum, the Milan Historical Museum, the Firelands Historical Society Museum, and others.
The Kelleys Island Maritime Festival is June 21 through 23. The festival commemorates the events of 1978, when a flotilla of islanders “stormed” the mainland to protest the then- governor’s decision to turn the island into parkland. The Kelleys Island Navy received national attention at the time!
If you would like to support a local museum – or just have a chance to win big – the Big Splash Early Bird Drawing is scheduled for Independence Day at Washington Park in Sandusky. The fundraiser benefits the Maritime Museum of Sandusky. Early bird tickets must be returned to the museum by 1p.m. that day to be eligible for the drawing at 3 p.m. Twenty tickets will be drawn for $500 a piece!
The Foundation for Firelands is holding a comedy night on June 23, followed by a golf outing on June 24. Both events are at Plum Brook Country Club.
