People are living longer. According to the
Census Bureau, the number of individuals age 85 and older is projected to increase by 52% in the next 20 years. And the longer we live, the more likely we will need some help. In 2010, 71% of individuals age 80 and older had a disability, 56% had a severe disability and 30% required some assistance with daily living.
Having a strategy planned by you is important to help ensure you receive the help and care you need, in the manner you would prefer. If you plan now, your wishes are more likely to be implemented, and your loved ones won’t have to wonder, worry or disagree. Your plan may be documented in writing, or simply expressed to your spouse, or children. Even no plan is a plan. Although it’s the plan that leaves you with the least say in the handling of your affairs.
Take it a step at a time. Picture your ideal care situation; Who is caring for you? Where are they caring for you? At what point does that change? Discuss the plan with your family and those that have a role in your plan. While having these conversations with loved ones can be difficult, they are much needed and may take several sessions. After you have a plan on paper, you will want to make sure you have proper funding in place and documentation in order. An advisor who is
