Meet Our Readers
Cathy Ullrich, Marblehead &Kelleys Island
By Sharon Sweda, Feature Writer
Kelleys Island is one of Ohio’s favorite vacation attractions. Vacationers travel back and
forth for daily, weekly or season long fun, and relaxation time on the charming island. Permanent residency is limited to several hundred who make the island their year-round
home. Such was the case for Cathy Ullrich and her late husband who previously resided in
Cleveland prior to making their island move. In his absence, Cathy raised the couple’s twin
sons, Matt and Steve on her own, and made the island their home until the boys were nearing 8nd grade and the mainland seemed to be a better educational option for them.
“I explored the mainland schooling options because Matt and Steve were 2 of the 3 students in their Kelleys Island class,” Cathy reminisces. “The mainland schools offered greater opportunity to develop friendships and to expand their world. After much evaluation and having consulted with a friend who was on the school board; I chose the Danbury School system.” It was a great environment and the now, Ohio State graduates, continue to maintain friendships from their days at Danbury. It was a great place to raise the boys.
Cathy has been employed at the Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line for the past 9 years. Prior to her position with the ferry line she worked at Seaway Marina.
“The ferry is a great place for me since I enjoy being around people,” she professes. “I meet travelers and tourists but also get to see people I haven’t seen in years. I often see those who have moved away and yet return to visit every so often. I love the girls who work with me. Everyone is just great!”
Non-work hours provide Ullrich with the time to read, bake, cook and do puzzles. She is a newer reader of Leisure Living Magazine. She was introduced to the publication by Publisher, Barb Clemons about a year and a half ago. “I look forward to the articles and appreciate the hometown focus and the features about local people. Leisure Living Magazine is just fun to read!”
