Meet Our Readers
Peter Huston, Put-in-Bay
By Brenda Haas, Feature Writer
Producer, writer, and two-time, Emmy-nominated director Peter
Huston, of FilmAffects, provides a lens-eye view through inspirational shorts, documentaries, and dramatic films. Having vacationed on South Bass as a child, the filmmaker turned his focus toward Lake Erie with his move from the east coast to Put-in-Bay, 15 years ago.
“It’s great to be involved and know what’s going on in your community,” said Peter, retired Director of Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce. “Island life is significantly different from mainland life. The island community here operates in a completely unique way.” Lake Erie Foundation board member, and now Project Manager for the Great Lakes Islands Alliance, he has run the PIB Arts Council, The Perry Group (documentary: “The Battle of Lake Erie-Bicentennial”), programmed the Twilight Music Series, and reviewed films for the Cleveland International Film Festival. He enjoys
competing at Sandusky Sailing Club, and his 27-foot racing sloop was 2019 I-LYA Jam Boat of the Year. Over the years, Peter partnered to launch the PBS series “The Visionaries,” positive stories about what is “important but sometimes overlooked.” He won Best Documentary at both Chagrin Falls Film Festival and Indie Gathering, received several Telly Awards, and worked with PBS, Hallmark, Home & Garden, Fox, and various non-profits. He recently completed, “Before innocence took a vacation,” a short film about a
cross-country, Route 66 trip.
According to Peter, “Film and television affects who we are and what we do.” Married 14 years to Amy
Newell Huston, he has two grown children, Miles and Kyle, from his first wife Cheryl (deceased). He may be reached at filmaffects.com or via Facebook.

Hello -
.....and, isn’t it nice to finally be able to see smiles
again? With restrictions for COVID-19 now lifted, anyone who has been vaccinated is no longer required to wear a mask. Personally, I have missed seeing the smiling faces of people enjoying themselves here on Ohio’s North Coast.
By all accounts, this is shaping up to be a wonderful summer on Lake Erie! The water levels have gone down this year so that we can all enjoy the beaches again. Lake Erie walleye fishing is phenomenal. Shops, restaurants and museums are all opening again at full capacity.
Just think, a year ago, we didn’t know when we would be able to attend a concert, go out to dinner or
celebrate with friends. Now, we can gather with friends and family to enjoy all that the area has to offer.
From the Islands to the Port of Lorain, we are open for business. There is so much to see and do! One of the places that is celebrating again this summer is Kelleys Island, which will hold its inaugural Celebrate KI event this month. You can read all about it in this issue.
So, take some time to enjoy the fun and relaxation that is offered along Lake Erie’s coastline and on the islands this summer. Travelling locally and supporting small businesses is not only a great bargain financially, but a lot of fun as well.
And, remember, Smile!
