exposed, for better or worse, to the challenges of peach growing and by now there were many more choices. Industry was growing in the area which could provide a more stable income. So the first two parts of the storm were

1945 an announcement was
made that General Motors
would be building a plant
(New Departure) that would
be up and running full speed
by the early 50’s. This was
the third part of the perfect
storm. This plant would not
only lure away many would-be farmers but it would also import a staggering amount of high- ly paid executives that would be brought into the area and would be looking for a beautiful area to build a home. By now most of you have seen how beautiful our land beside the lake is. That fact is not a secret now, nor was it back then. As the de- mand for homes here rose, so did the land value.
Coincidentally, there were many aging farmers that could be persuaded to sell parts or all of their land. The rest is history. The constant pressure to sell farms at the ever-rising values has transformed Catawba from a peach paradise to a vacation des-
tination.

thing other than profit. If you stop by any of the remaining orchards and roadside stands you will surely meet the owners, husband and wife, work- ing at what they love. We hope you will stop by this summer and not only pick up some of this year’s great crop but also
