Who Will Care For You When You Can’t Care For Yourself?

It is a fact that people are living longer. Have you stopped to think about what that may mean to you or your loved ones? Chances are pretty good that the day will come that you won’t be able to manage on your own. Many people think their private health insurance or Medicare will pay for long term care and others assume their family will provide the care they may need. Is that what’s really best for you and them?
I have seen firsthand through by mother’s challenges how important independence is to the aging population. We all strive for it most of our lives. Having a Long-term care policy in place helps you keep your independence. It puts you in control of the who, what, where and when. It allows your loved ones to be care managers versus caregivers. Please stop and repeat that, care managers not caregivers. Having a LTC policy allows you and your loved ones to choose the best care for you at that time, versus doing the best we can with what we have. Being able to
stay in our homes where things are familiar to us and we are surrounded by our life’s treasures is what most of us want. Please don’t be fooled that having a LTC policy in place will make these decisions easy. It will not. But it will give your family the peace of mind that you will have what you need.
I often get asked, when is the best time to buy LTCI? While most claims are made when people reach their golden years, waiting can be a costly mistake. Not only will a policy be more costly when you are in your 60s or older, you risk a decline in your good health. The rates are based on age and health, so shopping for a policy when you are in your 40s or 50s can be beneficial. Take a step today to protect your independence in your golden years.
