Volunteers Who Give
The Christmas Cookie Grandma, Sharon Ostling Snider
By JD Noll, Feature Writer
Recognized around city hall and the community, Sharon Ostling Snider is Port Clinton’s Christmas Cookie Grandma. Every year she
ties on her apron during the Community Christmas event sponsored by Main Street Port
Clinton and this year she can
be found on December 1 at
The Island House.
For Sharon, this has
turned into an annual tra-
dition for the last three or
four years. She bakes and
freezes around 20 dozen
cut-out sugar cookies three
weeks prior to the holiday
event. Children visiting Santa
can decorate them with com- plimentary frosting and sprin-
kles before jumping in line to
visit the jolly old man and Mrs. Claus to recite their wish list. “It’s a lot of fun, and I do it for the children’s enjoyment. They get so excited. When my son was little I, maybe, baked one batch of sugar cookies. I don’t do well

Rich Norgard

around ovens,” Sharon jokes.
The lifelong resident is a retired
school and city employee who also volunteers with the Planning Commission and St. John Lutheran Church committees. Through the years she has donated her time with the high school athletic boosters, Walleye Festival, and the sesquicentennial
committee.
For several summers,
she and her husband, Snip (Jim), the former Ottawa County auditor, were vol- unteers at Longs Peak in the Rocky Mountain National Park, and then campground hosts at Morraine Park Campground in Colorado. Sharon credits her parents for instilling her volunteerism. “They volunteered a lot, and when my hus- band and I retired, we wanted to “pay it forward.” And, indeed, Sharon is
doing just that.
