Meet Our Readers
Peggy Debien, Port Clinton
By Brenda Haas, Feature Writer
Peggy Debien, retired Naval officer and Ottawa County Museum’s curator, was born and raised in Port Clinton, followed her Navy uncles “in search of travel and adventure,” and eventually replanted her roots in Portage Township on Sandusky Bay.
“We live in a highly historic area,” said Peggy. “The museum tells the story of how our people contributed to this history.” Many of Peggy’s ancestors were from the Toussaint area, and her father and grandfather co-owned Bell Fish Company, of which a fishing boat was christened “Peggy-Sue.” A PCHS graduate, Peggy attended U.S. Navy Women Officers School and was commissioned in 1970.
“The Navy gave me many opportunities to try new things and see new places,” said Peggy, of her 24 years of serving across the nation. She did two years with the British Royal Navy and was U.S. Navy Commanding Officer of Personnel Support for detachments in England, Wales, Scotland, Germany and Belgium, eventually becoming Director of Navy Fleet and Family Support Programs for 80 naval bases worldwide. In addition to traveling, Peggy enjoys reading, anything England and volunteering for Ottawa County Historical Society, Port Clinton’s Musical Arts Series and other area organizations.
As an officer, Peggy was expected to make improvements in any assignment given, and she aims for the same with the museum. “As we get older, many of us become more interested in our past,” concluded Peggy Debien. “I find it enormously gratifying to help someone find out about their family or our history.” Ottawa County Museum, at 126 West Third Street, Port Clinton, 419.732.2237. There is no admission fee.
