Meet Our Readers
Duane Waite, Catawba
By Joseph Gilroy, Feature Writer
Music has always been a big part of Duane Waite’s life – but somewhere along the line he decided to put his instruments away and focus on earning a living for his family. As it turns out, that was only temporary as Waite picked up the urge to play again 15 years ago and he has never looked back.
“I played the trombone back in college but stopped playing afterwards,” says Waite. “About 15 years ago I answered an ad for Terra State Community College in Fremont and met the guys that are in the band and that is really what the catalyst was for Sea Jamz 7.
“We kind of found a niche’,” he added. “Nobody in the area really does what we do. In a typical show we play jazz, rock, the classics, and some of the real oldies – but, we put our own spin on them. Most of the music we play everybody has heard and it makes the audience say, ‘that’s new’. I have heard that song, but never like this, and that is what we want to do. Give them something that they like, but add our own touch
to it.”While the Catawba native spends most of his free time in Sea Jamz 7, it is not the only thing that he does musically. He fills in for several bands in the area and can be seen at Put-in-Bay on September 29 where he will be sitting in with “The Together Band” at the Boathouse.
When he isn’t entertaining audiences, Waite can be found running Transport Concepts International, a logistics company that he owns, or sitting on his deck in his swing reading Leisure Living Magazine.
