Meet Our Readers
Connie Brand, Marblehead
By Brenda Haas, Feature Writer
Marblehead Peninsula’s Connie Brand has a love of the lake and music. A consultant for family-owned Brands’ Marina, Connie also serves on the steering committee of the Musical Arts Series in Port Clinton.
“I’ve lived on the lake my entire life,” said Connie, who grew up in Conneaut. “Our family vacations were always on boats.”
In 1978, she and her husband Darrell were building a sailboat when they chose to move west from Cleveland to buy a marina in Port Clinton. During the growth of their career, the Port Clinton Lighthouse came into their possession. They
eventually offered it to the city for renovation by Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy volunteers. Darrell passed away in 2019. Married for 60 years, the Brands had three children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Connie enjoys opera, reading and making quilts for the Linus Project, but her volunteer hours often center around the Musical Arts Series. In its 19th year, it began at Firelands Presbyterian Church as a classical music series featuring chamber ensembles and now includes folk, Celtic and jazz groups.
“Music changes your personality. It speaks to part of your soul and your spirit ... Our Musical Arts Series is unique,” concluded Connie. “We offer the community the opportunity to enjoy accomplished musicians from all around the world.”
In addition to concerts starting in September at Port Clinton High School’s Performing Arts Center, Musical Arts Series offers “Opera on Wheels” to schools, entertainment at senior living communities and a December “Burning River Brass” concert. Hello- Established 2005
...and, today I’d like to give a Big Shout Out to a local farmer who has become a national celebrity! Farmer Lee Jones of the Chef’s Garden in Huron and Culinary Vegetable Institute in Milan was on the Today Show on July 6th.
What a pleasure it was to see a local farmer, who has done so much for the community, in the national spotlight. Farmer Lee Jones proudly wore his trademark overalls and bow tie on national television. He wears them as a symbol of his commitment to environmentally sound agricultural practices and he lives that commitment every day.
He says that healthy soil creates healthly vegetables, healthy people and a healthy environment.
Recently, he published a cookbook called “The Chef’s Garden: A Modern Guide to Common and Unusual Vegetables – with Recipes.”
He and his brother, Bobby work hard to ensure that their 350-acre family farm is one of the most innovative in the world. They provide chefs worldwide (including some famous chefs like Julia Child and Martha Stewart) with the best seasonal vegetables, microgreens, herbs and edible flowers. Last year, during the COVID-19 pandemic they began offering home delivery as well, so that they could keep their staff employed and share the bounty with home cooks.
So, we say Congratulations to Farmer Lee Jones on the publication of his book. And, Thank You to Continued on page 22
