Put-in-Bay’s Austrian Gem

It’s late summer along the lakeshore with fall creeping our way. While the winding down of the vacation season means fewer crowds and the gradual “hush” that many of us look forward to, there are still myriad opportunities to enjoy the warm, sunny days that will favor us through au- tumn. Imagine a quaint, shady outdoor space on a quieter Put-in-Bay where you can relax with friends on a pleasant afternoon, sipping some of the best lagers and pilsners in the world. Soft pol- ka music emanates from a rustic chalet while tan- talizing aromas of sizzling bratwurst, frankfurters and freshly-baked pretzels drift to tables staggered throughout the garden. Imagine Salzburg. Imag- ine Bavaria. Welcome to Das Lokal Biergarten, where fresh air meets beer and authentic Austrian street food.

It also had the logo of Stiegl Bier, our favorite brand of beer from the oldest family-owned brewery in Austria. We stopped at Moser’s for a schnitzel and a Stiegl, and learned from the Austrian owner how he was able to have Stiegl Bier on draft. Our biergarten was born!”

“Das lokal biergarten” translates from German as “The restaurant’s biergarten”. Caroline Jackson, co-owner with her husband Scott, felt that this was a fitting name for the lovely Alpine oasis that adjoins their popu- lar eatery - Goat, Soup and Whiskey. While Goat, Soup and Whiskey has been an established island restau- rant since 2006, their bier- garten addition came along years later. A vacant BBQ pit on the restaurant property deemed itself to be a superb spot for a biergarten, but Caroline and Scott’s search
