Myths Of Long Term Care
Continued from page 21
to modify your home to fit your changing needs as you get older, even expenses that might not be associated with LTC.
Myth #4 – My family will take care of me
This is assuming your family members or children live nearby when care is needed. Will they be able to perform the consistent level of care you may need? Balancing work and family in today’s society can be challenging enough without the added burden. Will they be able to handle caregiving on top of their daily responsibilities? It is a proven fact that caregiver’s miss an average of 7 hours of work per week, almost 18% of a 40 hour work week. (aarp.org/ familycaregivingcostssurvey) This negatively impacts their income, saving, retirement savings,
pension and social security benefits. Being a caregiver can be time consuming and draining, as well as both physically and emotionally exhausting. The AARP study revealed that 54% of caregivers experience negative feelings as a result of caregiving, including guilt and resentment. Long term care policies are not so much for the insured, but for the ones they love. LTC policies protect the ones you love the most, giving you choices where and who you want to care for you and allows your family to make the most of your time together.
