Summer
Hair gets lighter.
Skin gets darker. Water gets warmer. Drinks get colder. Music gets louder. Nights get longer. Life gets better. — Unknown
We are in deep summer along the lake- shore. After a blistering July, August offers warm lake temperatures for swimming and water sports, starry nights plus the Perseid Meteor Shower, and plenty of live music that will rock our boats. Our suntans are well-established. And our hair, well, grate- fully streaks of sun and streaks of gray work well together. August is the time to grab an ice-cold local ale or chilled glass of local Chardonnay with loved ones and toast life on the lakeshore. Life is good...but life in the summer is better!
Prost!
Grab the lederhosen and head to Ore- gon, Ohio for the German- American Fes- tival August 26-28. As Toledo’s oldest and largest ethnic celebration, this event offers myriad authentic activities for everyone in the family. Dance to traditional German music, savor mouth-watering German food, and reach for a cold imported beer. Cele- brate the German in you by competing in the Bavarian mug throwing contest, the pret- zel and Swiss cheese eating contest, and the German strudel baking competition. Kids will have a grand time on the amusement rides and will be able to compete in their own cultural contests—the Hummel figurine look-alike contest, and the kids’ strudel bak- ing contest.
The German-American festival supports the Toledo area German and Swiss cultural center while providing fun, authentic enter- tainment for all ages. Save the dates, brush up on your German and bring your friends and family to this half-century old area tra- dition!
Celebrating Life, Love, and Hope
The month of September plays host to two lakeshore fundraising events close to the hearts of the Leisure Living Magazine staff. The 2016 Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place in Sandusky September 10, with a 2-mile walk starting at the Ohio Veterans Home. Registration begins at 9:30am, fol- lowed by a ceremony at 10:30am that will kick off the 11 o’clock walk. Participants may walk as individuals or as teams, and helping them achieve the goal of $45,000 is easy! Simply go to www.act.alz.org to make an online donation and to learn more about the event and the strides that are being made to conquer this devastating disease.
September 24 and 25 are the Findlay and Toledo race days for this year’s North- west Ohio “Race for the Cure” sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Proceeds go directly to breast cancer awareness and research. Saturday, September 24 the 9am Findlay race will be held at the Blanchard Valley Hospital Campus. The Toledo race begins at 9:30am Sunday, September 25 on Monroe Street. Both races will have three start lines—the 5k Team Race, the 5k In- dividual Race, and the 1-mile Family Fun Walk.
